Bach 50B2- playing through stuffy valves
Listening is super helpful! I try to listen to trombone music when I first wake up and have breakfast. Get the ears primed. I'm usually listening to some type of music throughout the day. I listen to a pretty wide variety of music. Not just the nerdy stuff. I got to do a lot of listening and part reading when I broke my collar bone and wrist in 2018. Couldn't hold up the horn for about 3 months. I had a lesson yesterday with Oliver Siefert, from the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, and he talked about using a metronome with no sound, just the light. So after relying on the metronome to count for us, turn off the sound and use only the light function to show the tempo. Turn away from it and then turn back later, to see if you're still in tempo.
Get well soon Aidan!! Thanks for the video
Thank you for this! I am a bass trombonist currently student teaching and I wish I had more time to play, but most of my time out of school is devoted to working on lesson plans. I've on occasion found myself doing some of these, but I'm gonna try to do so more consistently.
Literally just got settled in to my college dorm and can't practice for the week since the music hall isn't open yet, thanks Aidan!
This video was super helpful, I just got diagnosed with TMD/TMJ and I have to take a few weeks off to let that rest. Thanks!
You have no idea how applicable this is to me rn 😅
I'm just curious how you cracked that rib?
Trying to remove a 17mm bolt on my Accord. I tried very hard haha
I got a schiller for $700 on the website, other than some sharp edges causing some rough slide bites and the 2nd valve rubbing on my neck, it seems like a pretty good horn. Its also the first and only bass I've played.
Thank you very much!
Cat had much to say
Great info here, especially for doublers!
I want a King 7B.
Good lesson!! I run the gamut from large tenor , Getzen bass, to Rath R9 with a 562/578 slide 10.5 bell for orchestral work - each wants a little different approach - the Rath just wants ALL your lungs!
Middle of the road has been amazing for me! I went through a lot of this without any direction. Wondering why does it feel so hard to play this instrument!? I'm finally hitting the sweet spot on both my horns, and I'm loving it! Fantastic video.
There is no better person to make this video than you!
I think there are many more qualified, but I don't see the info out there!
Here here! (as they say) Lots of good stuff here, Aiden. I play tenor, bass, tuba, and trumpet...and do a lot of adapting.
Never ever get rid of your King 3BF. IT is a workhorse snd very reliable.
Como la que usó Willie Colón en los últimos años de la década del 70 y principios de la década de 1980, incluso en discos de estudio. 👂📻🎵🎤✍️
Yes, he may have! I do not know.
What the heck is a Hanstul ??
Conn 62H with a Kanstul 1662 bell
Can I do this with my slide too?
The outer slide only. I personally don't, since the slide doesn't matter as much looks wise
Thanks for the guide and tips. Really helpful!
Deja vu? Didn’t you post this before
I'm hearing lots of technician bills.
Where how do you acquire so many bones?
All the usual places
Brass instruments are so part dependent. Different mouthpieces alone change everything.
What was the solo you played at the first of the video? I liked the sound of it.
concerto in one movement lebedev bass trombone
@@pumpkinsameer2218 Thanks!
Where do you buy and sell?
Mostly facebook marketplace. But you can always hit up my lesson link in the description if you're interested in a horn!
*looks at thumbnail* right on dude 🤙
I'm curious to know what that tuning slide came off of. Was it the blessing?
Which tuning slide? The one on the 42 is an Artisan crook, heat-treated and mounted by my tech. The one on the reverse horn is probably from the Blessing the bell is from. It's smaller than an 88H TS crook.
@AidanRitchie Sorry I was talking about the nickel tuning slide on the Bach 42.
Nicely done! I have to echo the "great sound" comments and excellent accuracy.
I like the monster bass the best. I think I prefer a bass that gets a little hot on the low notes, but I understand why that's not ideal for most professional playing. I like when a bass can make low notes sound bright without sounding thin. Horns like this have a more vocal quality to me because the tone is less consistent just like a singer. I feel like modern bass trombones are mostly designed to keep the buttery fat sound no matter how loud you play it rather than the tone vary greatly with different dynamics.
Ideally, you have a horn that can do a bit of both- it's even and consistent, but also lets you change the tone color when you like. That's what I've found with my current stable, and the Monster is not part of it.
I hope you get tenor gigs also. From what I’ve heard, you certainly should.
My job is on tenor! I play both pretty much equally time wise these days.
My valve won’t come out of the bottom. 🤦♂️
More tappy taps needed! Nothing harsh, just lots of taps.
This guy really covers the basses.
So far I've had my new 2024 Yamaha YSL-448G in service for 3 weeks. I double between Tenor Trombone and Bass Trombone. Absolutely am complete garbage on the small bore because I have spent 16 years on the bass trombone. Having a Large Bore Tenor Trombone Yamaha with a closed wrap just made sense to me.
Hey ! Love the Sarastro bass ! Have you ever played Edward's instruments?
Well, i got my answer to it later in the video 😅 but can you do a review on Edward's bass maybe?
I have owned a couple 454s, yes. But they are not really my favorite, I don't seek them out when buying horns.
Aidan, what's the Doug Elliott setup you're using for those horns?
XT104N.C+.D3+
Hello! Here in Germany the 800 trombones were sold in the 80s of the last century. I owned and now own an 842 (Bb/F) with a .550 bore. As far as I know, the 8000 numbers were only intended for Japan or were custom-made. I just bought a YBL-8110 from Japan (like the YBL-611) and also had an 8210 (like the 421), all with 'custom' slides and the typical tuning slide rings and the double trapeze rings on the slide .
Nice find! I have a Yamaha 421G and was troubled by the trigger. Sometimes my thumb would cause the trigger to not fully return--the side of my thumb would touch the portion of the lever going back to the valve. I had a tech change the trigger so that the lever was above my thumb and it suddenly became much more playable for me. He was even able to reuse all the Yamaha parts. Enjoy the horn!
I've never had a problem with the underslung trigger, actually!
Is that Bach 16M still available? If so, how much will it cost?
Right now I'm thinking $1600- if you're interested, hit up my lesson link.
Thank you for your videos! I was wondering if you could make a video about stripping off the lacquer? Always wanted to do it on my chinese horn ;)
Yes I will!
@@AidanRitchie I am really looking forward to that. Keep up the great work! Thank you a lot!
I use a 3BF as my tenor horn, it’s such a great instrument!
I had no idea Yamaha even made a .500” Bb/F! Seems like a great horn, seeing how good the 352 genuinely is. I still do prefer the projection pattern of the 3BF, but the response was a little thuddier, so I can see why you’d like the Yamaha’s immediacy for playing the higher parts in the section. How are the ergonomics? The overall weight distribution and the trigger hold seem like quite an adjustment for a 3B player.
It's different, but I also play so many horns that it just doesn't bother me
Did you ever do a video on the 3B+w/f you mentioned? That’s one of my favorites and was always curious to hear your thoughts.
I'm not sure I have, actually- and that's the one I'll be selling I think!
I'd kill to have that 852... I love my Yamahas, been looking far and wide for something that plays like (or better than) my 354 that also has a valve.
It's exactly that!
Marvellous tip! It works! Thank you!
That’s exciting!!
What do you use to strip the lacquer, I had my shop do it, and there is sooo much still left. I'd say about 10%. So I figure I would just do it myself...
I'll make a video about it, finally- clear some things up!
The 852 is cool but the 3BF still just has something special about the sound and the craftsmanship.
Yup, it's sticking around for sure. Just not at work!
A nice getting off of work present! Great sounds as always.
